BYD Seal: The Return of the Sedan

The BYD Seal has officially jolted my cold, dead motoring heart back to life. In a sea of soft-roaders and tall hatchbacks pretending to be adventurous, this is a proper low-slung sedan — sleek, wide, and actually exciting to look at. It’s available in three flavours, three different ranges, and three different prices, so whether you want sensible commuter or electric rocket ship, there’s a Seal with your name on it. The Performance version absolutely rips — 0–100 happens so fast you’re already checking your rear-view for flashing lights — yet it still rides comfortably enough for proper Kiwi roads.

Inside, it’s loaded with tech, a rotating 15.6-inch screen, ventilated seats, heaps of space, and enough gadgetry to make a Swiss Army knife blush. Charging speeds could be quicker and I’d love to see brighter interior colour options for NZ, but those are minor grizzles. Bottom line? It’s sharp, it’s fast, and it proves the sedan isn’t dead — it’s just been waiting for a glow-up.
