KGM Torres EGX

SsangYong has rebranded as KGM, and their new electric SUV, the KGM Torres EVX, is their first big flex. It’ll set you back $68K, and promises 462km of range from a 73.4kWh LFP battery. The 152kW front-wheel-drive motor hits 0–100km/h in 8.1 seconds, which is peppy enough to embarrass your old petrol SUV but won’t make your mates at the lights cry.

Inside, it’s like a TARDIS for humans, with 733L in the boot and 1,662L with the seats down—you could fit the in-laws or your entire camping kit, plus an inflatable mattress and even a shower if that’s your vibe. Heated and ventilated seats, dual 12.3-inch screens, and a vehicle-to-load outlet mean you can brew a flat white in a power cut, run a blender in the bush, or charge a mate’s phone without looking like a lunatic.

It rides smoother than it looks, handles city corners reasonably well, and yes, it will happily spin its wheels if you put your foot down like a hooligan. Despite the rugged styling, it’s about as off-road as me in wet jandals. Compared to a Tesla Model Y, it holds its own, and it’s cheaper than a Highlander that still drinks petrol like it’s happy hour. If KGM can convince Kiwis they’re more than a new brand of weird SUV, this could be the cheekiest EV in town.
