The BYD Seal Premium might be the Goldilocks of the lineup. Not too expensive, not too slow, and not too thirsty on electricity. At around $70,000 you get up to 570 km of range from an 82.5 kWh battery, plus a buttery-smooth ride that makes it one of the most comfortable highway cruisers in New Zealand. Power comes from a single rear motor with 230 kW and 360 Nm, good for 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. That is plenty quick unless you are drag racing Lamborghinis on the school run. Real-world range is closer to 490 km in winter, which is still very respectable. You also get plenty of tech including a head-up display, 360° camera, leather interior, vehicle-to-load power, and 150 kW fast charging. It may not be the brutally fast performance version, but it is cheaper, goes further, and still has more gadgets than a Star Trek shuttlecraft.
