I spent the day at the 2023 E-Mobility Summit in Auckland, and wow—what a showcase. From Hayden Paddon’s record-breaking electric Hyundai rally car to heavy-duty rigs like a Scania truck with a 300 kWh battery, there was no shortage of tech muscle on display. I got to poke around chargers with built-in battery packs (perfect for off-grid or high-demand sites), play with an all-electric excavator that runs a full workday on a charge, and even annoy a few stall holders with questions about their latest kit.
What stood out was the variety: mobile chargers for construction fleets, clever telematics platforms helping businesses switch to EVs with confidence, and slimline DC chargers that pack 150 kW into a surprisingly tidy footprint. Add in cyber-secure AC chargers and even full EV-ready switchboards made in New Zealand, and you can see the industry is maturing fast.
Sure, there were great talks and panel sessions, but for me it’s always the gadgets that steal the show—I’m already looking forward to an even bigger Summit in 2024.
