How to Charge an EV: NZ Edition

Charging an EV in New Zealand is easier than it sounds. Most Kiwis plug into a regular home socket, which is slow and can take up to two days. A 7 kW+ home charger like the Evie E2 is faster, app-controlled, solar-ready, and costs $2–3k. On the road, AC chargers are convenient for long stops. DC rapid chargers can hit 50 kW in about an hour. Hyper-rapids deliver up to 300 kW in under 20 minutes for fast EVs, though cheaper cars charge slower. Charging 10–80% is quickest. Apps like Charget, PlugShare, or Better Route Planner make trips simple. Charging in the rain is safe. Costs range from free with solar to $14 per 400 km on eco electricity or $50 at rapid chargers.
